Milestone 3 report February 16, 2009

I have spent the day writing on my milestone 3 report that now is finished and sent to AK. I became rather big and detailed but I hope that is okay and I wrote about what I have done in each phase, why I chose my subject and what I plan to do in the future and I ended the report with some thoughts of the project itself. It “accidently” ended on 2550 words which is quite okay for a report. It might be too much but I’ve desribed what I’ve done and how I have done it which is what I wrote in my project plan that I would do. I will spend the rest of the day polishing my presentations and play Mass Effect.
Have a nice afternoon!

So, I’m done with the text part of the presentations now, all 10 of them. Now I’m going to fix some explaining pictures to the presentations. I have a meeting next week on Tuesday with Ted when I’m supposed to pitch the ideas, hopefully not at the same time as the MS3 meeting but we’ll see. That makes the upcoming Monday a perfect day to write the MS3 report.
The final 10 that I made presentations on is:
- Sun vs. Clouds
- Lost in the Desert
- Space Station Breakout
- Rize
- River
- Triangle Evolution
- Elemental Railroad
- Eco
- Electricity!
- the Tree
The two last ones are my picks, I change my mind after this mornings post and changed Boy/Soul to the Tree which I think is a new type of game, a really relaxing game which you can play anytime pretty much.
2 out of 10 left… February 13, 2009

So, today I have to pick the last two ideas for phase 3 and if I check the voting Electricity and Radioactive mutation would be the clear choices. I like Electricity, Simon posted a link yesterday to a similar game on Kongregate but it wasn’t exactly what I was going for, but sure there were some similarities. Radioactive mutation might not be a clear choice thou, it is not a bad idea but it could work better with a fullscale budget I think, so that one is gone now.
Ted’s two last choices and the two that I can change is Taging Robot and Chicken Survivor. Taging robot is about a robot who” blades”, goes around on inlines, around a space station painting or tagging the walls and should do so for as long as possible and avoid getting caught by the guards. Chicken survivor is a multiplayer game where a couple of chickens try to avoid the foxes that are looking for dinner in different environments.
Then we also have other concepts that are pretty nice, Boy/Soul is a nice one I think, I get Lost Wind vibes from it which is always nice and I think it could work as a downloadable title. I probably go with that idea and then Electricity!
Yesterday we had our weekly Skype meeting, it wasn’t to much to say in it, we work and work and hopefully get done in time. I am not worried for my project, I’m in phase with my schedule and got it all under controll. This weekend I will create even more art for the presentations and hopefully next Monday I will get to pitch the ideas for Ted and I hope I can do my research on the titles and be done with them on Friday with another meeting that day so that I can start with my prototypes then, a couple of days earlier then planed. But we’ll see how that turns out.
Next milestone is due to next week, I will prepare a document on my work so far, what I will do in the future and how it have worked out. Shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours to complete and it would be nice to be done with it so that I can focus on phase 4 next week. Might work on the report when I get some spare time.
Flower is released on the Playstation Network since yesterday, I think I will buy it since it is a game that is similar to what I’m working with right now and also has the mentality that I want some of my games to have. The mentality that says “Cool down and relax when you play this game, there is no need to rush”. I might also run down town to sell a bunch of games to Game but that is more of a personal matter and should be explored in my personal blog.
Have a happy morning everybody and have a nice day!

I thought I should upload some pictures that I am using in my presentations so here goes, just remember that I’m not a pro in art but they was created to explain clothing and what they should look like.
The pictures are from Lost in the Desert, Space Station Breakout and Sun vs. Clouds.

I am know finally in phase with my schedule, today I started working early; around 8, to have the time to do three presentations which I’m done with now. Some things are missing thou, mood boards, reference and pictures but all the text is in place. I am going to spend the rest of the afternoon creating beautiful art for my games that I shall use in the presentations, mostly pictures of characters but gonna create some others things as well like sequences that describes certain parts of the games.
To create my presentations I use eight questions that I answer and here is the list I promised the other day:
- What is the background story?
- Who do you play?
- How do you play?
- How many players can play the game?
- What genre is the game in?
- What is the theme and style of the game?
- Which is the most important rule in the game?
- What is the goal in the game?
I’ve created background stories for every title so far, even for puzzle games but they ain’t to deep. I’ve done six presentations so far, got four more to do but only two titles are known since I get to pick the two last titles as Editor’s Choise. I can’t decide which to continue on and which to leave behind, those I’m thinking about are:
- the Tree
- Electricity!
- Radioactive mutation
- Glacier Terminal
- Parkinghouse Defence
Parkinghouse Defence is a multi player shooter where you have to defend yourself from a horde of zombies until the rescue helicopter comes and get you but it might be too similar to Left 4 Dead so I might throw that away.
Glacier Terminal is pretty much a Tycoon game where you should build a living space for a lot of people inside a glacier, but Tycoon games have been made before and it’s not really any new thinking inside the idea. That makes it three ideas left…
the Tree is a indie game where you play a tree that grows, you decide where it should grow and you pretty much watch it get big. Not a game for everybody but a more relaxing game that could be played with some cool music.
Electricity is an adventure game pretty much where you have have to run thru a deserted city on a freezing winter night. You only got a flashlight with you that scares away the animals that wants to eat you but the battery is rather bad so you have to find sources of electricity to load the battery once in a while. I think its a rather cool idea and I might go with it.
Radioactive mutation is another adventure game with puzzles in it, you are stranded inside a nuclear power plant that just had a terrible accident and you have to mutate yourself to get out but also watch out to not mutate to much so they don’t recognize you outside.
Please vote with a comment on what idea you think I should pick, I will start working on them on Friday so you got today and tomorrow to “vote”. And yes, you can vote for the two first aswell.
And then 20 became 10 February 9, 2009

I met my mentor today to discuss and pick out 10 ideas of the 20 I worked on last week. I pitched them to Ted and then he picked out eight ideas that he thought was good ones. Then he let me chose two if I had any wishes on what ideas that I would se go further. I might have an idea on which ideas to pick but at the moment the list looks like this:
- Sun vs. Clouds
- Lost in the Desert
- Space Station Breakout
- Rize
- River
- Triangle Evolution
- Elemental Railroad
- Eco
That’s the eight Ted picked out, so I have two more ideas to pick, he suggested Taging Robot and Chicken Survivor which is two good choises but some of the ideas that I would have like to see didn’t make it so I might pick two different ones.
So this week I will create ten power point presentations which I probably will pitch for Ted next Monday. I will create atleast two presentations each day textwise and then I might spend some extra to create some flash content to them to explain my ideas a bit further and pictures is always funnier to watch then text.
I am going to use a couple of questions to describe my ideas but more about that tomorrow. Night people!
